An idea, service or product, new to the NHS or applied in a way that is new to the NHS, which significantly improves the quality of health and care wherever it is applied

Innovation at York and Scarborough

YSTH NHS FT is a hotbed for innovation and new ideas. With around 10,000 staff, we have teams and individuals who are regularly looking at how to improve the services and care we provide to patients. We have a rich history of research and innovation, working with partners from across healthcare, academia and industry.

Innovation starts with a new idea. It could be a new product or service; a new method for running a service; or a new model of care to support patients. Innovation may be a ‘big bang’ idea, but it is equally as likely to be something incremental or local, which improves things for patients or staff. We have a rich innovation history, bringing together ideas and improvements is central to continuing to provide high quality care for our patients, their carers and families and to support our workforce.

Whilst there is widespread recognition of the importance of innovation in healthcare, the term can mean different things to different people.

When supporting innovation we use the term innovation to represent:

  • Invention – creating and shaping ideas, products, services or new models of care
  • Adoption – implementing something of benefit that has worked elsewhere

It’s important that we embrace both invention and adoption so that new solutions are developed to solve challenges and unmet needs and can be implemented at pace.

We work in partnership with industry and play an active role in collaborating with colleagues throughout the regional and national health and care system.

We can help colleagues to develop their solutions and roll them out for spread and adoption

1Strategic Partnerships

Our offer to innovation partners:

  • A unique patient cohort UK – spanning all clinical specialities and services, including the community setting, including a rural and coastal population
  • Track record of success in R&I – we have consistently delivered a range of projects and have been successful in funding awards, including from Government and industry contracts.
  • Professional support – our experienced Innovation Team has specialist expertise and extensive knowledge of Intellectual Property (IP), innovation, commercial engagement, grant development, and partnership working – current strategic programmes include our Health Innovation Cluster, IRIS, and local VCSEs
  • Rich data assets – our patient population of 800,000 people across the North East, this includes maternity datasets, rare head and neck cancers, and a robust gastrointestinal disease dataset

2Intellectual Property

IP arising may vary from simple copyright materials such as guidelines, clinical tools and training materials, through to more complex and potential patentable inventions, such as medical devices, diagnostics, digital tools, and therapeutics.

The team provides support for managing IP and innovation resulting from collaborative research and partnerships with other NHS organisations, universities and industry. We have close links with Medipex who can provide expert advice alongside our Innovation and Commercial team.

The IP and Innovation Management Service offers:

  • support for staff creating or developing solutions to meet clinical, workforce, and service needs
  • substantial experience in protecting and managing IP and, when commercialisation is the best way of putting innovation into practice, negotiating deals and securing financial benefits, such as royalties on income
  • support for staff working with commercial partners to develop or evaluate their products for the benefit of NHS patients and healthcare provision through our commercial team
  • advice and support with formalising relationships and ensuring that the value of the Trust’s contribution to collaborative outputs is recognised and managed appropriately, and that there is a mutually beneficial relationship
  • guidance for drafting and executing confidentiality agreements, collaboration agreements, clinical study agreements, revenue sharing agreements and other relevant arrangements.

3Ideas Hub

We are currently developing our Ideas Hub. The Ideas Hub will be our internal innovation space, designed to support all staff across the Trust regardless of role with their innovation ideas. It brings together case studies, innovation resources, training videos, and direct links to Quality Improvement and Clinical Effectiveness.

Whether you need guidance, tools, or inspiration from the Ideas Voting System, the Ideas Hub makes it easy to develop and share ideas that improve daily working life, patient care and how services operate.
