We have a portfolio of palliative research that is largely lead by Professor Miriam Johnson. Professor Johnson's research focuses on cancer, life limiting illness and the management of related symptoms. Of particular interest are interventions concerning breathlessness and Professor Johnson has generated and delivered a number of studies relating to this. Professor Johnson has experience of writing and delivering both simple observation studies and national multi-centre randomised control trials of both drugs and complex non-pharmaceutical interventions within the field of palliative medicine. We also conduct research projects that are Nurse led by those that have an active interest in palliative care. Our research benefits from close relations with both Hull York Medical School (HYMS) and Saint Catherine's Hospice.
Palliative care research is a growing area across the Yorkshire & Humber with three Professors of Palliative Medicine (Miriam Johnson and Fliss Murtagh at HYMS, and Mike Bennett at Leeds) and two new Senior Lecturers in Palliative Medicine at Sheffield (Paul Taylor and Catriona Mayland). The York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust hospitals are therefore well placed to contribute to portfolio studies led by Yorkshire and Humber clinical academics.

Our Research Team
We have dedicated National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), Clinical Research Network (CRN) funded Research Nurses and Clinical Trials Assistants within York and Scarborough Hospitals working on Palliative research. Some of these members of staff also regularly visit Saint Catherine's Hospice to see research participants. Each member of the research team are trained to national standards of Good Clinical Practice (GCP). A number of Clinical Nurse Specialists in our Hospitals are also involved with delivering our research.
