Obstetrics & Gynaecology Research
Obstetrics & Gynaecology (Obs & Gynae) is the medical speciality that deals with maternity, childbirth and women's health. Obs & Gynae research hosts one of the most diverse portfolios in the Trust with studies covering a very broad range of maternity and gynaecology related areas.
The Trust hosts a dedicated team of specialised Research Midwifes based on Ward G3 at York Hospital. At Scarborough Hospital Obs & Gynae research is covered by the Generic Research Team.
With an excellent reputation for delivering high quality clinical research the team work very closely with the consultants, midwives, gynaecology nurses, anaesthetics team, surgeons, sonographers and community team in a Department where clinical research is high on the agenda.
Clinical research in the area of Maternity is incredibly diverse and very exciting! Focusing on the health and wellbeing of mother and baby before and after birth. Maternity research covers a broad range of treatment and conditions. Recent studies conducted within the Trust have included; looking at pain relief during labour, gestational diabetes, perinatal depression, smoking cessation, child development and support.
One of the Trust's biggest stories was working with the University of York to deliver the Born & Bred in Yorkshire (BaBY) study. BaBy is a long-term, large scale study that will be following babies born within York Hospital for a number of years, charting their health, development and the wellbeing of their family. With over 5,000 babies recruited it was one of the biggest research projects ever conducted by the Trust!
Gynaecological research investigates the care of women's reproductive health related conditions as well as early pregnancy care. Endometriosis in particular is a very big area of interest within the department with a number of very important clinical trials investigating this common and problematic condition.
